Helping autism speak: finding expression through song

As part of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music’s triennial Performers(‘) Present International Artistic Research Symposium - Telling Stories, Rachel will be presenting her research paper on “Helping Autism Speak: Finding Expression through Song.”

Abstract

Every individual has a story regardless of their abilities. As there is a higher prevalence of diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across countries all over the world, there is a greater need to help each individual find their unique voice and a way to tell their story. Research has shown that many people on the spectrum have a particular affinity for music, possessing absolute pitch and some even displaying savant-like abilities. The presentation will discuss the use of music as a tool for connection with individuals with autism, and my journey mentoring a six-old-year girl with autism through a series of voice lessons that helped her develop her voice for expression, language and communication. I will also address the benefits of private music instruction for children with autism, teaching strategies in the studio and expand on practical steps for developing lesson outlines, methods and adaptations that allow the space for creative expression.

Unheard: a history of women composers

In commemoration of Women's History Month, we present our first edition salon lecture-recital "Unheard: A History of Women Composers."

Over the centuries, women struggled to be heard in a world dominated by men. Women who desired a career in the arts or sciences had a particularly difficult time gaining respect and credibility for their work. Many hid behind pseudonyms or gained recognition only because of their marital status.

Join us as we explore the music of women composers: Caccini, Strozzi, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Beach, Vieu and Boulanger, and how they defied stereotypes to be heard, setting the tone for future generations to follow.
