My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that each individual has a creative voice, that can be used for self-expression and connection with others. My goal is to help my students discover and find that voice in song through a somatic approach. My teaching involves an awareness of the body and how it moves and functions with regards to singing. Healthy singing comes from a combination of having a flexible voice and full-body engagement, which allows for greater freedom and expression.
Like all other disciplines, singing requires consistent practise and fine tuning. It takes time, patience and perseverance for the mastery of skills, and to experience the vast possibilities of the human voice. I believe that singing is an extension of the spoken voice and the understanding of balanced coordination between breath and flow is key to this transition from speech to singing.
I am deeply interested in the needs and goals of my students and tailor my lessons to their individual learning styles, as I believe that no one singer learns the same way. The voice is a personal and powerful instrument, and regardless of the musical style or genre, each individual should be able to express themselves fully and freely, whether singing as a hobby or pursuing a professional career in the music industry. With my varied performance background, I emphasise the importance of being a versatile singer and encourage my students to explore singing different styles and repertoire. I am committed to provide my students with the necessary tools and practise routines that will build their confidence and musicianship.
My approach to teaching singing is suitable for all different genres and experience levels. As long as my students are committed to learning and exploring with honesty and curiosity, their potential for growth is endless. Ultimately, I hope that my students find joy in the process of singing, and develop an appreciation and love for music that they can eventually share with others.
